A stroke can change everything–Your strength, your balance, your ability to do everyday tasks. But it doesn’t have to mean giving up your home or your independence.

What Is a Stroke, And Why Is Every Recovery Different?

A stroke happens when blood flow to part of the brain is interrupted or reduced, preventing brain tissue from getting oxygen and nutrients. This can cause brain cells to die. The effects depend on which areas of the brain are affected and how severe the damage is.

Because different parts of the brain control movement, speech, cognition, and sensation, symptoms can vary widely. Some people experience weakness or paralysis on one side of the body, difficulty speaking, or challenges with memory and thinking. Others may have vision changes or trouble with coordination.

The road to recovery looks different for everyone, too. Some regain abilities quickly; others face a longer journey requiring ongoing support.

Why Aging in Place After Stroke Requires Specialized Home Modifications

Physical changes after stroke, like weakness on one side, difficulty coordinating movements, or challenges with speech and cognition, impact how you move through your home and perform daily activities.

Without proper support, these challenges increase the risk of falls and make simple tasks frustrating or unsafe. Thoughtful home modifications help bridge that gap, reducing hazards, increasing accessibility, and promoting independence.

What Does a Stroke-Safe Home Look Like?

Every stroke survivor’s needs are different. That’s why our expert team starts with a detailed home safety assessment to identify strengths and opportunities for improvement based on your home, your unique needs, and your situation.

Here are some of the most common modifications we recommend:

  • Grab bars and handrails installed securely in bathrooms, hallways, and stairways to support balance.

  • Zero-step entryways and ramps to eliminate barriers when mobility is affected.

  • Widened doorways and clear paths to accommodate mobility aids.

  • Non-slip flooring to reduce fall risk, especially where surfaces may get wet.

  • Lever-style door handles and faucets that are easier to operate with limited hand strength.

  • Accessible storage and switches placed within easy reach.

  • Emergency alert systems customized to your needs so help is always within reach.

Real Stories, Real Impact: Nate’s Father’s Journey Inspires Our Mission

Our co-founder, Nate, is not only a Certified Aging in Place Specialist (CAPS) and licensed contractor at Onni Home, he was also personally driven to start this company based on his family’s experience. Nate’s dad suffered a series of strokes much earlier than anyone expected, turning their entire family’s world upside down.

As part of the “sandwich generation,” Nate was raising two kids and working full time while trying to support his dad from afar. Nate’s dad lived in a rural area, and his family struggled to find the resources and support his dad needed to thrive and regain his independence. It became clear to Nate very quickly that most homes aren’t designed to accommodate the challenges stroke survivors face.

That experience inspired Nate to co-found Onni Home, to provide expert, compassionate home modifications tailored to real families navigating these difficult transitions. We bring that same dedication to every client, helping stroke survivors in Boulder and Jefferson County, Colorado to regain their confidence and independence.
